What is a WHV (Work and Holiday Visa)? How to Apply?

Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462)

The Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) is a one-year temporary visa established by the Australian Government to encourage young people to travel, work, and engage in cultural exchange in Australia. Visa holders can legally work, travel, and study in Australia — and some may even be eligible to apply for a second or third year extension!

WHV Eligibility Criteria:

  • Age: 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)

  • Citizenship: Must hold a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China

  • Education: Completed or currently studying at least a diploma-level qualification

  • English proficiency: Minimum IELTS score of 4.5 overall, or equivalent scores in PTE, TOEFL, etc.

  • Health and character: Must undergo health examination and provide police clearance

  • Funds: Must have sufficient funds to support initial stay (usually AUD 5,000)

  • First-time applicants only: Cannot have held a WHV previously

Ballot System for Chinese Applicants (Effective 1 October 2024)

From 1 October 2024, passport holders from China, India, and Vietnam must participate in a pre-application ballot system.

Steps to Enter the Ballot:

  1. Create an ImmiAccount

  2. Be aged 18–30 at the time of registration

  3. Hold a valid passport issued by China

  4. Hold a valid Chinese National ID

  5. Have a valid email address

  6. Verify your email address

  7. Agree to the declaration

  8. Pay the registration fee (AUD 25)

Key Dates for 2024 Ballot (China):

  • Ballot registration period: 1 October 2024 – 8 November 2024

  • Ballot selection period: 14 October 2024 – 30 April 2025

Visa Benefits:

  • Work rights: Legally work for up to 6 months with the same employer and earn income to fund your trip
